Kiemelték vasárnapra virradóra a new yorki Hudson örvénylő, jeges vizéből azt az Airbus-t, amelynek kapitánya csütörtökön kényszerleszállást hajtott végre a folyón. A vizsgálat szerint egy madárraj csapódott a gépnek, illetve a két hajtóműbe, ezért volt kénytelen leszállni a kapitány, a hősként ünnepelt Chesley Sullenberger a Hudsonra.
A repülőn 150 utas és 5 fős személyzet volt, és mindannyian túlélték a balesetet. A repülő a new yorki LaGuardia reptérről szállt fel nem sokkal a szerencsés szerencsétlenség előtt. A belföldi járat az észak-karolinai Charlotte felé tartott, amikor valószínűleg vadlibák kerültek az útjába , és a karambol csaknem katasztrófával végződött. A madarak nemcsak a hajtóművekbe kerültek megbénítva azokat, hanem a pilótafülke ablakához is hozzácsapódtak, megfosztva a gép vezetőjét a kilátástól. Amióta ez kitudódott, Sullenberger bravúros vízi landolását sokan még nagyobb teljesítménynek tartják. Az 57 éves pilóta egyébként nemcsak gépeket vezet, baleseti vizsgáló és biztonsági oktató is.
